Achievement

1. Existing capacity of NIH and Provincial Public Health Laboratories (PPHL) in COVID-19 detection enhanced from 18,000 tests per month to 40,000 tests/month

Twelve (12) new and latest PCR machines along with associated hardware and software were delivered to NIH (on December 27, 2021) enhancing the capacity for conducting tests to more than 40,000 tests per month.
1 PCR Machine (Tianlong Gentier 96E can process up to 96 samples in 7 seconds in addition to sample preparation time.

2. Gene sequencing facility introduced at 2 provinces and one federal laboratory

Gene Sequencing machines have been installed in Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar.

3. At least, 500 health care workers trained on different aspects of safety including IPC, good laboratory practices, and drugs testing

754 health care workers (378 females and 376 males) got trained in 4 events.

4. Storage capacity of testing kits and equipment increased to 1 million testing kits per month. (2021 Baseline: 0.6 million kits/month)

Four (4) new cold rooms (each having capacity of 6-8 Tonnes) were delivered to NIH (on November 9, 2021) enhancing the storage capacity of testing kits up to 1 million.

5. An upgraded computer-based Laboratory Management Information System (LMIS) deployed replacing the current system. (2021 Baseline: An LMIS with limited functionality)

Hardware items along with required software were delivered to NIH (on November 16, 2021). The system has been installed in the nutrition section of the NIH.

Project Objective

The project objective is to respond to the COVID 19 pandemic in Pakistan and strengthen diagnostic services for public health preparedness in order to help the poor and vulnerable to lessen the impact of the pandemic in Pakistan.

Project Outcome

Outcome 1 Detection: Laboratory and Diagnostic Systems Strengthened to ensure prompt case finding and local containment and increased surveillance capacity through testing and diagnostic services.

Outcome 2 Capacity Building: Capacity Building of Health Care providers in patient Safety

Project Impact

The project strengthened capacity of NIH and Provincial Public Health Laboratories (PPHL) Network for effective response against COVID 19 pandemic in Pakistan. The sophisticated state of the art well equipped labs, departments and capacity enhancement services are benefiting at least 35-45% of Pakistan’s population.

Project Description

In the face of COVID 19, the country was in dire need of urgent measures through additional resources for strengthening the real time surveillance and early detection, containment of potential COVID 19 cases and embedding of prevention and control measures to halt/minimize local transmission, so that the health systems do not chock under pressure and the country does not face a situation like the one faced by some of the countries which were most affected by the pandemic. Therefore, urgent preventions, detection and response measures were required to manage the ongoing outbreak. This entailed requisite system strengthening, timely diagnostics, establishing isolation rooms, measures for infection prevention and Control (IPC), critical care/case management across health care facilities, field surveillance for timely detection, provision of PPEs, clinical equipment and diagnostic equipment and online supply chain data visibility. Keeping in view the above context the project worked on strengthening the detection and diagnostic services by provision of equipment, gene sequencing facility and capacity building of health care providers on IPC, Good lab practices (GLPs) and Occupational health and Safety (OHS) for frontline health care workers.
