Project Objective

The objective of the project was to ensure that communities in vulnerable areas are at reduced exposure to risks posed by natural hazards and are better prepared to response and cope in disaster situations. This is achieved through the following:

  • Infrastructure improvements reduced vulnerability to hazards through schools retrofitting and flood protection structures.
  • Non-structural measures improved government and community preparedness to respond when disasters strike. This was achieved through implementation of a range of community-based disaster risk management activities in vulnerable settlements (including formation of Village Disaster Risk Management Plans, formation/strengthening of CERTs, creation and/or distribution of emergency toolkits and equipment, and awareness-raising activities).
  • Installation of Early Warning Systems (EWSs).
Project Outcome

Communities vulnerable to the negative impacts of multiple natural hazards better protected and became resilient.

Project Impact

Increased Institutional and Physical capacity to reduce the socioeconomic and fiscal impacts of natural hazards and climate change in Pakistan.

Project Description

An integrated, multi-input program designed to ensure that people living in the mountains of northern Pakistan are as safe as possible from the effects of natural disasters. The project undertook disaster risk reduction and mitigation interventions in Six (6) mountainous districts: Chitral and Mansehra in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Ghanche, Skardu, Gilgit and Hunza, in Gilgit-Baltistan. The project took two-pronged approach. Firstly, the project enhanced protection of men, women and children from the effects of natural disasters on human habitats. Secondly, the project enhanced the ability of communities and government authorities to respond effectively to natural disasters. The project adopted community centric approach grounded on the principle of equity for marginalized groups/individuals and sustainability. This is achieved through infrastructure improvements and nonstructural measures.
